Some additional information about butter chicken:

  • The origin of butter chicken is somewhat disputed, with various stories claiming to explain its creation. One popular version of the story is that it was invented by a chef named Kundan Lal Gujral in the 1940s at his restaurant, Moti Mahal, in Delhi. Gujral is said to have come up with the idea of cooking leftover tandoori chicken in a tomato-based gravy with butter and cream, creating the now-famous butter chicken.
